DFO seeks action against those spreading disinformation on social media

The Forest department has requested the police to take action against those spreading misleading video clips of big cats on social media following recent incidents of leopards attacking humans in Dehradun. The Mussoorie divisional forest officer Vaibhav Kumar Singh has written to the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh in this regard.

The DFO has stated that following recent incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the Raipur range of the forest division, some anti-social and mischievous elements are intentionally sharing old photographs and video clips from different parts of India, claiming that these are from Dehradun. Such material is being spread on social media to unnecessarily create an atmosphere of fear among the local residents.

As a result of such actions, the Forest department personnel are facing difficulties in mitigating the incidents of human-wildlife conflict, the DFO has stated. The DFO has requested the SSP to lodge an FIR under relevant sections of the IT Act and IPC against these unidentified persons. The social media handles of the persons responsible and WhatsApp groups should be identified and monitored regularly, the DFO added.

It is pertinent to mention here that recently some clips and photographs have spread on social media including one which claims to show a tiger in the Dehradun area. The authorities have already clarified that there is no tiger movement in the Dehradun area.
