With Chaitra Navratri starting on Tuesday, the markets in Dehradun are crowded with devotees purchasing various items for Pooja and other decorative items.  The nine-day festival will commence from April 9 and continue till April 17. This festival, spanning nine days of fasting and worship, pays homage to Goddess Durga and her nine manifestations. Owners of shops selling Pooja items have noted a surge in their sales due to Navratri.

A considerable number of devotees was observed at the Pooja stores in the city markets on Monday. Shop owner Pratik Bhandari claimed that there has been a surge in devotees visiting his shop to purchase various Pooja items such as Chandan, Pan leaves, Kalash and more. He said that many customers are also buying miniatures of temples to be installed in their homes for Navratri rituals.

“Upon the commencement of the Navratri festival, a significant number of devotees flock to the market. These devotees visit the market over nine days to purchase items for celebrating the festival. The sale of worship items like red decorative Dupattas, Tilak and various other items has notably increased at my shop in view of Navratri,” another shop owner Vishnu Prasad said.

A customer, Lata Negi said that the nine-day festival of Navratri holds significant importance for Hindus. To honour this tradition, she has initiated her Navratri shopping, buying the necessary Pooja items and food for the fasting period, she said.

Apart from the marketplace, the city temples have also been adorned with lights and flowers in preparation for the Chaitra Navratri festival.
