Wednesday, 13 March 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has demanded that the government should conduct the caste census and economic mapping in the country.  Interacting with the media persons at Congress Bhawan on Tuesday, Mahara said that the recent statement by a Member of Parliament that the party is aiming to win seats in the Lok Sabha to bring changes in the constitution exposes the strategy of the BJP.

He said that BJP is planning to change the constitution drafted by BR Ambedkar and its objective is to suppress freedom of expression, destroy democratic institutions and democracy in the country.  He said that the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former president Rahul Gandhi believe that the caste census and economic mapping of the society is necessary to bring social justice.

The Congress believes the share in resources should be as per the population (Jiski Jitni Hissedari Uski Utni Bhagidari). Mahara said that 90 per cent of the population of the country is engaged in farming, labour and small jobs while the powerful positions in bureaucracy, banking and other sectors are occupied by people who are less than 15 per cent of the population.

Mahara said that the caste census in Bihar has revealed that the dalits, adivasis, backwards and minorities comprise 80 per cent of the population. The PCC president said that the BJP government has exempted loans worth Rs 16 lakh crore of 23-24 businessmen while the banks coerce the general public  when he fails to pay two or three installments of loans.
