The State sports minister Rekha Arya said on Wednesday that marking the national sports day on August 29, the Mukhyamantri Khiladi Udiyaman Protsahan Yojana (MKUPY) will be launched under which children aged between 14 and 23 years will be given Rs 2000 per month as sports scholarship. She announced this after a review meeting attended among others by the director of the sports and youth welfare department Jitendra Sonkar.

During the review meeting, Arya said that the birth anniversary of the hockey wizard Dhyan Chand should be celebrated appropriately in the State. Notably, this legend’s birthday is celebrated as the national sports day in India.

She further said that the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami would inaugurate the MKUPY scheme. “Under this sports scholarship scheme, 100 boys and 100 girls from each of the districts of Uttarakhand would be selected and in all, 2600 children would avail this monthly scholarship across the State,” she said, adding that this financial support would enable them to acquire the sports equipment.

During the meeting, she reviewed the progress of several sports schemes now in execution level. Dwelling on the State government’s endeavours to boost the sports potential of the State, she said that a slew of sports awards, including Devbhoomi Uttarakhand Khel Ratna Award, Devbhoomi Uttarakhand Dronacharya Award and Lifetime Achievement Award, are being bestowed on the sportspersons.

Further, the minister directed the department officials concerned to firm up a proposal of six players being selected from the State to be felicitated with awards amounting to Rs one lakh.
