With the commencement of Navratri, a period of reverence to Goddess Durga, many devotees observe fasts and abstain from certain food items in their diet. Experts state that during fasting, individuals often tend to consume excessive calories due to overeating. This overconsumption can lead to health issues such as bloating and constipation. It is crucial to prioritise staying properly hydrated while fasting during the Navratri days, said the experts.

Dietician Richa Kukreti told this correspondent, “Typically, individuals tend to engage in overeating during fasting periods, which can have a negative impact on their health. Given that Navratri is currently underway, many worshippers observe fasting for either one day or nine days. So,  my suggestion would be to refrain from indulging in excessive eating during this fasting period. It is also important to ensure that the consumption of dry fruits is moderate as they can significantly increase calorie intake.”

She further said that overeating during fasting can lead to various health issues such as constipation and bloating. It is advised to have only one meal during Navratri fasting and opt for lighter food options while avoiding oily dishes, she added.

Further, physician Dr Anshika Jain said that while fasting people tend to engage in overeating, which indirectly impacts their health. Currently, Navratri is being celebrated, and during this time, individuals make it a point to consume a moderate amount of food while fasting. One important aspect to note is the avoidance of oily foods during Navratri. Additionally, it is crucial for individuals to stay hydrated during fasting. So, it is recommended that those fasting opt for beverages like lemon water, buttermilk and coconut water at the time of fasting, she added.

She further emphasised that consuming heavy meals and excessive quantity of dry fruits can lead to various health issues such as increased sugar levels and cholesterol. To maintain good health, it is advisable for individuals to stick to light meals during their fasting period, she said.
