ASER survey reveals sorry state of education in Tehri

The survey report of Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023 in Tehri district to check the quality of education has revealed disappointing aspects. In the survey of youngsters aged 14 to 18 years in the district, 65 per cent do not know how to solve simple division questions in arithmetic. At the same time, 39 per cent of youth are not able to read simple sentences in English. This survey was conducted in 60 villages of the Tehri district.

Every year, Pratham Education Foundation conducts this survey to check the quality of rural education across the country. In Tehri district, this survey was completed by the BEd students of SRT Campus Badshahithaul in the months of September-October. ASER had conducted this survey in 2023 with youngsters aged 14-18 years in Tehri district. The ASER report for Tehri district shows that given the level of education among the youth, they are not able to do much better. About 16 per cent of the youth are not able to read simple text of class II level. At the same time, only 61.6 per cent of youth are able to read simple sentences in English. When it comes to arithmetic, the youth are lagging far behind. Only 34.9 per cent of the respondents in the survey were able to answer simple division questions.

The report has also revealed that about six per cent of the youngsters are not undergoing education in any institution. In daily calculations, only 39.3 per cent of youth are able to calculate the time. The report states that 94.7 per cent of the youth have smartphones at home and 98.3 per cent said that they know how to use smartphones. Senior associate of ASER, Himanshu Bisht said that most of the youth of the district are using social media in daily life but still only 20 per cent youth are able to use important applications like online payment and Google maps. In the conclusion of the report, Bisht has said that basic fundamental skills like arithmetic are very useful for daily tasks and even simple calculations which the youth should pay special attention to as such skills also have an impact on their daily activities.
