Area under organic farming increasing in state- Uniyal

The area under organic farming in Uttarakhand has witnessed an increase of 23 per cent in the last five years. The agriculture minister Subodh Uniyal informed the house on Thursday that the percentage area under organic farming in the state has increased from eight per cent to 31 per cent. In response to a question of Tehri MLA Dhan Singh Negi, the minister said that a total of 2.62 lakh hectare of land is under organic farming in the state and last year 4.05 lakh farmers had sold organic produce worth Rs 37.11 crore. On organic certification, the minister said that ‘Adoption and certification under organic farming’ programme under the national agriculture development project is operational in the state. He said that 1.08 lakh farmers have been given organic certification with an area of 78,000 hectares of land. The minister added that many blocks of the state would be made organic blocks and a plan is afoot to make the entire Pithoragarh district as an organic district.
