The additional director general of police (Crime, Law and Order) AP Anshuman held a meeting with all district in-charges on Tuesday to review arrangements for Operation Smile that commenced across the State on May 1. It is a two-month long campaign which is conducted every year since 2015. He informed that five teams each have been formed in the Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts and one team each in the remaining districts and railways to search for the missing persons. Each team consists of one sub-inspector and four constables. He said that the campaign is being conducted mostly in such places of the districts where chances of finding missing people are high like shelter homes, dhabas, factories, bus stands, railway stations and religious places among others. The ADG directed the police to make efforts to find missing people in neighbouring states and send teams if they suspect the missing person to be found there. He instructed officials to match missing bodies with unclaimed bodies found in the state and border areas. Once the missing persons are found, appropriate action should be taken in accordance with the regulations regarding their return or rehabilitation. He said that children and women should be interrogated as per the rules. The police must take strict action against offenders if a crime comes to light regarding the recovered person. Anshuman said that Operation Smile was launched in 2015 and till 2023, the police have found a total of 4,611 missing people including 2,486 children, 1,207 women and 918 men.
