World Glaucoma Week: GDMC conducting free check-up for Glaucoma

With the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) observing World Glaucoma Week in Dehradun from March 10 to 16, the government-run facility has been offering free check-ups for Glaucoma to all the visiting patients. Informing this on Wednesday, a senior eye specialist at GDMC Dr Sushil Ojha informed that the check-up process had been started on March 10. “As per the plan firmed up to commemorate the international occasion appropriately, we are ready to check 1,000 patients a day till March 16. At least 15 patients are being detected positive for the ailment daily,” he added.

Queried on the features of the ailment, Ojha said that Glaucoma is an ophthalmologist disease also known as black cataract. “According to the research conducted on it, around every eighth person in the country suffers from this disease. About 11.2 million Indians have been diagnosed with it while 1.1 million people are blind,” he said.

Dwelling further on the matter, the noted eye specialist said that the common symptoms of this disease include headache, blurred vision, seeing different colours around lights and gradual reduction of the range of vision. “The risk of the disease increases  significantly after one attains 40 years, necessitating   regular check-ups,” he said and added that to combat the worrisome spread of this dreaded ophthalmologist ailment, people on reaching 40 years should make it a point to have their eyes checked regularly.
