World class sports training academy to be built in Tehri: Singh

4th Ranking and Open Canoe Sprint Senior championship begins at Tehri lake

Every company under the Ministry of Power will adopt at least one sport as part of efforts to boost sporting culture in India. Stating this, the Union minister for Power and, New and Renewable Energy RK Singh said that a world-class sports training academy will be developed in Tehri. The better performers at this academy will be sent abroad for training by THDC India Limited. He said this after inaugurating the 4th Ranking and Open Canoe Sprint Senior (Men and Women) Championships at Tehri lake along with chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday.

Singh said that there is immense potential for hydropower in the mountains. The Central and State government are working together to capitalize on this potential. The Centre and State are working together to fulfill the requirements of Uttarakhand, he added.

Chief minister Dhami said that hosting this event in Tehri will contribute to building the national image of Tehri dam at the national level. He said that this is the first occasion when a national-level event is being organized on the Tehri lake. A healthy sports culture is being developed in the nation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with sportspersons of India delivering commendable performances at various international-level sports events. He said that a number of players from Uttarakhand are also doing good at the national and international levels in different sports. He said that the State government has implemented a new sports policy and also revived the sports quota in government jobs. He thanked THDCIL for organizing the national-level event on the Tehri lake.

Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Bansal, Tehri MLA Kishore Upadhyaya, Pratapnagar MLA Vikram Singh Negi, Devprayag MLA Vinod Kandari, THDCIL chairman and managing director RK Vishnoi and others were also present on the occasion.

The THDCIL in collaboration with the Kayaking and Canoeing Association of Uttarakhand, Indian Olympic Association, Uttarakhand Olympic Association, and ITBP as a technical partner is organizing the 4th Ranking and Open Canoe Sprint Senior (Men and Women) Championships, (Tehri Water Sports Cup) from December 28 to 30.
