Women undecided on reliability of NARI, express mixed opinions

PIONEEREDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

Women in Dehradun have expressed mixed opinions about the National Annual Report and Index on Women’s Safety (NARI) 2025 which ranked the city among the bottom 10 cities in terms of women’s safety out of 31 cities surveyed across India. While some agree with the report, many believe that Doon is afer than other cities and that women too should be more ware and proactive rather than following the victimhood narrative.

Agreeing with the report, localite Savita Negi said that over time, crimes and other related activities against women have increased in the city. Sharing her personal experience, she said that she felt comfortable shopping in the market in the past but a few days ago, she encountered eve-teasing while shopping.

She discussed this issue with her friends, who also agree that such activities have risen in Doon. Negi emphasised that instead of merely paying lip service, the authorities should take prompt action to enhance women’s safety.

Similarly, college student Urja Verma said that while Dehradun once felt safe for women to move freely in, it has now become difficult for females to walk comfortably even near their homes. She said that incidents of eve teasing and bullying have increased in public places like markets and public transport.

On the other hand, many women consider Dehradun to be a safe city. Localite Jiya Dhingra stated that she believes Doon is safer compared to other places. She suggested that rather than solely focusing on the increased crime rates, authorities should work towards improving women’s safety measures in the city.

The authorities are not solely responsible as the women also must be aware of their surroundings and know how to address such situations and where to file complaints.
