Woman waiting for ambulance delivers baby on roadside

Questions are being raised at the government medical services in the district after the video clip of a woman giving birth on the roadside near the Mela hospital here went viral on social media. It is alleged that the woman could not get an ambulance to take her to the hospital on time.

It is being claimed that a poor woman suffering from labour pain waited for one hour for 108 ambulance and government ambulance to arrive.  But when no ambulance arrived, during the rain the woman gave birth to a child on the road outside the Mela hospital in the wee hours on Friday.

The woman is said to be a resident of Brahmapuri area in Haridwar.  At about 1 AM on Friday, the woman started experiencing labour pain and left for the hospital with her husband.When the couple reached near the hospital, the woman’s labour pain intensified and she started screaming. Hearing the screams of the woman, the nearby people also reached the spot. They informed the 108 ambulance service and also called for the ambulance from the district hospital nearby. However, in the absence of an ambulance to take her to the hospital, the woman reportedly gave birth on the roadside. The woman and her child have been admitted to the district women’s hospital.Medical superintendent of the district women’s hospital Dr Rajesh Gupta informed this correspondent that the hospital can’t really answer about the incident. If someone is claiming that 108 ambulance did not arrive on time, the staff of that ambulance service will answer. The woman and her newborn were admitted to the women’s hospital and both are fit.

Meanwhile, the district programme officer Deepesh Sharma informed, “We had received a call at 2 AM and at that time the nearest 108 ambulance was on its way from AIIMS Rishikesh. After that another nearest ambulance was sent to the spot. According to my data, the ambulance had reached at 2:22 AM and the 108 ambulance staff provided necessary treatment in the ambulance itself. At 2:51 AM we admitted the woman and the baby in the hospital.”
