A woman along with her three children including a six-month old was found dead in their home in Joshigaon area of Bageshwar district late on Thursday. The police suspect that the woman committed suicide after killing her children as the room was locked from inside and poison was found which the mother possibly used.

The superintendent of police of Bageshwar, Himanshu Verma told The Pioneer that some workers repairing a drinking water line in the area reported to the police about foul smell coming from the deceased’s room on Thursday. He said, “A police team reached the location and had to break the door after getting no response from anybody inside. They found that the woman’s body was lying on the bed and those of her children on the floor. There were no visible injuries on their bodies.

The team also recovered poison from the room but found no ration or any food in there that indicates the family was going through bad financial condition.” He said that the bodies appeared to be at least five to six days old. “We have sent the bodies for post mortem to ascertain the accurate cause of death. The poison found in the room has also been sent to the laboratory for testing,” said Verma. He said that prima facie it appears to be a case of murder-suicide considering the currently available evidence but the police have started probing the matter from all possible angles. He also informed that the woman’s husband has been absconding for many days as police were looking for him regarding a fraud case. He said, “The husband has borrowed money from several people and duped many due to which, the police and some creditors have been looking for him for the past few days.

He has been absconding since a police complaint was registered against him last week. The locals also informed us that he had not visited his family for the past several days.” The SP said that they are trying to get in touch with the husband to take the investigation further.
