67 arrested so far under Operation Maryada

The police have arrested 67 persons so far as part of Operation Maryada being undertaken in the State to maintain the sanctity of pilgrimage centres and cleanliness of tourist spots. Under this special operation, the police are arresting those found indulging in rowdy behaviour and consuming intoxicants at pilgrimage centre and along the banks of the Ganga river while penalising those found littering tourist spots.

According to the State’s director general of police Ashok Kumar, from April 29 till the present the police have arrested 67 persons under Operation Maryada. Further, 2,703 persons have been penalised and a fine of Rs 7,03,850 has been collected from them.

It is pertinent to mention here that the police had started Operation Maryada last month after video clips showing people smoking hookahs at pilgrimage routes and and drinking alcohol on the banks of the Ganga had gone viral on social media.
