The Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ has given an ultimatum to the EESL company of terminating the contract if it fails to repair damaged street lights of all wards before Deepawali. He stated this in a meeting with the officials of the company in the presence of municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal on Thursday. He said that if the company fails to achieve this goal within stipulated time, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will carry out repairing work of all street lights itself through its light section and will deduct charges from the company’s payments besides terminating the contract.

The senior officials of the corporation have been consistently receiving complaints against the companythrough many locals of several localities and councillors for over a year.  According to them, the street lights on many routes and lanes do not work regularly causing problems to many people travelling at night, especially during winter, as it gets darker early during this time. Many MCD officials and councillors have also claimed that the company does not take cognisance of complaints even if they register a complaint of a location at a personal level.

The mayor said that the company has not been efficient enough to handle the works as per the agreement due to which, the MCD officials have to face the wrath of locals and the councillors. He said that the company has been given enough chances so far and if it fails once again to execute repair and maintenance work of street lights across the city, the MCD will terminate the contract and will deduct charges from the company’s pending payments to carry out the required work.
