War on Rafale spills to streets

BJP workers tear posters at Rajiv Bhawan, Cong to retaliate by torching effigies

The continuing spat between Congress and BJP over Rafale aircraft deal spilled over on to the roads in Dehradun on Wednesday as the workers of both the parties confronted one another near Rajiv Bhawan, the State Congress head office, on Rajpur Road. Agitated over the relentless attack of the Congress president Rahul Gandhi-they dubbed as a bundle of falsehood-the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a protest meeting at Gandhi Park on the day. After the rally was over the BJP workers led by  the Mahanagar president Vinay Goyal and Dharampur MLA Vinod Chamoli marched towards Rajiv Bhawan, the state Congress headquarters. The police personnel deployed there placed a barricade near Astely Hall to prevent the march from reaching the Congress office. However, some of the BJP workers jumped the barricades and reached Rajiv Bhawan. The sloganeering from the BJP workers was matched by the Congress workers who were present in a good number inside the office. The Congress workers erupted in anger when some of the BJP workers tore the banners and flexes put up by the Congress.Rafale issue Heated exchanges of words ensued. Tension further mounted when some BJP workers allegedly misbehaved with some senior Congress leaders. The police swung into action to prevent a showdown between agitated workers of both the parties. The onlookers blamed the district administration for allowing the protest meeting and BJP rally to come near the Congress office. In the evening, a delegation comprising the state Congress president Pritam Singh, Kedarnath MLA Manoj Rawat and others met the additional director general (ADG) law and order, Ashok Kumar and complained about the failure of police to control BJP workers.  The Congress leaders handed over a complaint to the ADG, stating that the BJP workers armed with sticks had attacked their party’s state headquarters,  engaged in arson and misbehaved with the women workers. They alleged that CO City, Chandra Mohan Singh had provided protection to the saffron hooligans. They further alleged that when he had been asked by the Congress leaders to stop the rampaging BJP workers, he had threatened them. The Congress meanwhile has decided to hold protest meetings in all the districts of the state in protest against the attack on the Congress office. The Congress would burn effigies of the Government during the protest rallies. Pritam Singh, while talking to the media persons, said that the failure of BJP to digest the recent humiliating defeat they had faced in the five states had sparked the rampage. He warned that the Congress workers would retaliate and give a befitting reply if BJP workers repeat such hooliganism. The CWC member Kumari Selja also condemned the attack on the Congress office and warned that Congress workers would take the battle to the streets if the BJP continues its hooliganism.
