VP’s Doon visit :Traffic crawl, commuters suffer

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

The Vice- President C P Radhakrishnan’s maiden Dehradun visit on Saturday triggered traffic congestion across the city.  Many commuters heading towards their offices had to remain stuck on the roads, forcing some of them to park their two-wheelers on the roadside and walk to their workplaces.

Meanwhile, the roads got a facelift ahead of the VVIP visit. Overnight, all the gaping potholes along the route were filled and roads along the route his cavalcade would pass were repaired.

The people this correspondent talked to said that they have been experiencing the same for years. “The city gets a facelift in terms of road repairing and fresh painting and pothole filling. This is good but this momentum should continue all year round,” said an elderly Doonite.

The worst traffic congestion was reported on the bustling Rajpur Road, where vehicles remained stuck for hours. Those- trapped in the long traffic queues- looked frustrated.

The Vice- President landed at Dehradun Airport at around 9:30 AM and was received by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and governor lieutenant general ( retd) Gurmeet Singh. Tight police security arrangements were made across the city, and police personnel were deployed along the routes of the VP’s convoy. To avoid traffic problems, heavy vehicles were not allowed to enter the city during the visit. The traffic police had issued a traffic plan one day in advance, but it failed to ease the congestion.
