The Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) has stopped issuing water connections to new construction projects starting in April and will continue this till the month of June. Secretary (Administration) Satendra Kumar Gupta said this while speaking about the measures being taken to ensure consistent water supply throughout the summer months.
Water demand typically rises during the summer, which can sometimes result in shortages. Gupta informed that the UJS has made comprehensive arrangements to ensure a reliable water supply across the State. He said that water demand does indeed increase in the summer. To address this, they have identified urban and rural locations where the depletion of water resources could lead to scarcity.
He stated that 183 urban areas have been identified where future water shortages are likely, along with 196 habitation in rural areas also recognised for the same concern. He said that in the event these areas can experience water depletion, the UJS has implemented preparations through various schemes. Gupta said that a total of 262 schemes have been developed, which include departmental tankers and generators to address the water depletion issue. He said that they have 74 departmental tankers and 223 private tankers ready for deployment during emergencies. Additionally, they have access to 118 generators, which will assist in pumping water during times of electrical interruptions or low voltage issues.
He also stated that, during this time, they have stopped supplying water connections to new construction sites from April, a halt that will last until June. Additionally, he said that they also organise an awareness campaign for the public. He further urged people to conserve water, particularly during the summer months and to avoid unnecessary water usage.
