Uttarakhand government has imposed a ban on the sale of Trikal brand of the whisky manufactured by Radico Khaitan Company in the State.
The ban order was issued by the Excise commissioner HS Semwal. The order follows the controversy over the name of the brand which is one of the names of God Shiva.
In his order Semwal said that the liquor brands which are similar to the names of gods or hurt the religious sentiments, Sanatan dharma and Indian culture will not be allowed to be sold and manufactured in Uttarakhand. He said that the State Excise policy prohibits such brands and their sale and manufacture will not be allowed in the State.
“It is the duty of every citizen and institution to respect the religious dignity and Sanatan culture of Uttarakhand, which is known as “Devbhoomi,” the order said.
The controversy arose on social media after the recent launch of the new brand of whisky titled Trikal. Many people including some Hindu organizations had expressed their anger to name the liquor brand after a Hindu God.
