USCW takes action in case of minor’ forced abortion

The chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women, Kusum Kandwal, has taken cognisance of a case involving a minor who was allegedly pregnant. The minor, approximately four months along, was admitted to Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital in critical condition after undergoing an alleged forced abortion initiated by the accused.

Kandwal informed that upon learning of the incident, Kandwal promptly visited GDMC to meet the victim. She engaged with the team from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Dehradun, including District Probation Officer Meena Bisht, to gather information about the case. It was revealed that the minor girl lived with her older sister in Brahmanwala, where a neighbourhood youth allegedly raped her, leading to her pregnancy. The accused, identified as Kaif, allegedly forced the girl to take abortion medicine, causing her health to deteriorate severely on the night of June 9, 2025. Her family then rushed her to GDMC hospital in an ambulance.

She said that she visited the GDMC to inquire about the victim’s condition and spoke with the treating doctors. She instructed the principal of GDMC, Dr Geeta Jain, to ensure that the victim receives the best possible treatment. Further, she directed Bisht and CWC member Neeta Kandpal to provide proper care and counselling for the victim after her recovery.

Kandwal has also called for strict punitive action against the doctor who administered the abortion medicine. According to a woman sub-inspector present at the scene, a case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections, following the directives of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Dehradun. The accused has been arrested in the Patelnagar police station area and a thorough investigation is underway.
