The chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) Kusum Kandwal stated that the recent verdict in the Ankita Bhandari murder case will serve as an example for others and deter them from committing such crimes. She made these comments in response to the ruling by additional district and sessions judge Reena Negi  who sentenced all three individuals to life imprisonment.

Kandwal expressed her appreciation for the verdict. She recalled that when the case initially came to light, Bhandari’s family members visited the commission seeking assistance. In response, the commission directed the authorities to take appropriate action. Additionally, she had urged chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to expedite the case by presenting it in a fast-track court.

Kandwal commended the State government for its supportive role in this matter. Regarding Bhandari’s mother’s plans to approach the High Court, Kandwal said that if they are not satisfied with the verdict, they have the right to seek further legal recourse. She acknowledged the family’s loss and emphasised that the decision to pursue the case further rests with them.
