USCW seeks report on young woman’s death in Chamoli

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun
The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) chairwoman Kusum Kandwal has asked the Chamoli superintendent of police to submit a detailed report within two weeks on the suspicious death of a 23-year-old married woman identified as Urmila, in the district.
Kandwal cited reports in newspapers according to which the woman was married about two years ago and had an 11-month-old child. While reports suggest she may have taken her own life, the possibility of her being coerced or instigated to do so is under serious examination. Following a complaint from the victim’s mother, the police have initiated a dowry harassment case against Urmila’s in-laws, including her mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, she said.
The commission has also directed the police to facilitate legal support to the victim’s family, Kandwal added.
