PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) chairwoman Kusum Kandwal has asked the Pithoragarh district magistrate Ashish Bhatgain to take swift and strict action in response to the alleged molestation of female students at the Government PG College, Berinag. A victim student has recently lodged a written complaint and a video of the accused professor was circulated widely on social media, bringing attention to the incident.

Kandwal took cognisance of the case, calling it extremely serious based on the viral video. During a phone conversation, she asked the Pithoragarh DM to implement prompt, effective and strict measures. She emphasised that those who compromise the dignity and safety of female students should face consequences and that if found guilty, the strictest possible punishment under the law must be enforced against the accused.

Kandwal expressed concern citing the said incident and said that it could foster an atmosphere of insecurity among college students. “While educational institutions should be centres of safety and trust, such actions not only undermine the integrity of the institution but also severely impact the morale of the students. The commission will keep a constant watch on this matter,” she stated.

The college administration has assured the victim of complete security and support, including mental health assistance.
