The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) and the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) have asked the Nainital senior superintendent of police Prahlad Meena to take strict action against the accused in a case involving the alleged rape of a minor girl by an aged Muslim man in Nainital.

This case involves a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by the elderly Muslim man. Both the USCW and SCPCR have taken cognisance of the matter.

USCW chairwoman Kusum Kandawal stated that she has spoken with the Nainital SSP and requested that strict action be taken in this case. Additionally, she plans to speak with the district magistrate to ensure that all licenses associated with the accused are revoked. She further expressed her intention to request chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to ensure that severe punitive measures are enforced against the perpetrators who exhibit such depraved mentality, aiming for them to face the harshest punishment in a fast-track court. She also emphasised that the properties of such criminals should be seized.

Further, Kandawal said that members of the USCW will meet the minor victim and her family to provide all possible assistance in their pursuit of justice.

The SCPCR chairwoman Geeta Khanna also expressed concern over the rise of such anti-social elements in society and the troubling mentality displayed by these criminals. She said that in light of this incident, the commission has ordered an inquiry by the SSP, stressing that every aspect of the case must be thoroughly investigated, and strict action should be taken. She further said that the district administration and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) have been directed to offer all necessary medical, mental and legal support to the victim immediately.

Khanna said that this incident underscores the need to further strengthen ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of children. She emphasised that society, the administration, and all responsible institutions must work together to maintain a zero tolerance policy toward such heinous crimes in the State.
