PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW), Kusum Kandwal has directed the commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh, Gopal Ram Binwal to take initiatives for setting up pink toilets in the city and ensure that female staff are assigned to them. This directive comes in the wake of a recent incident in which a 50-year-old toilet operator allegedly molested a seven-year-old girl in a public toilet in Rishikesh.

Kandwal informed that the incident had occurred at a public toilet located at Purani Chungi on Haridwar Road in Rishikesh. “The crime was committed on Tuesday evening and the survivor who is a minor resides in Chandeshwar Nagar colony.  This is a shameful incident. I visited the survivor and her family,” she added.

Kandwal further said that the commission would ensure that stringent action is taken against the perpetrator of the crime.   “I have contacted the station house officer in Rishikesh for updates.  The accused has been arrested and a case has been registered against him under the POCSO) Act,” she said, adding that employing only female staff for pink toilets would enhance security for their female users.
