UPES holds national conference on environmental management
The well-being of the environment is always more important than the technological and economic development, said noted environmentalist and author Vandana Shiva. She was speaking at an online national conference on sustainable management of environment and natural resources through innovation in science and technology held at UPES in collaboration with DBS (PG) College. The event was funded by Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST).
Addressing the participants, Shiva cited the example of Himalayan forests depletion due to the unplanned utilisation/application of technological interventions. She also shared her experiences while founding Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy (RFSTN) and Navdanya – a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources especially native Indian seeds and to promote organic farming and fair trade with the participants.
Professor Virendra Sethi from Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT Mumbai spoke on emissions from coal cooks stoves and possible future work in the area of processed solid fuels for cook stoves. The UPES vice chancellor Sunil Rai and conference convener, assistant professor from DBS College, Nirmala Koranga also spoke on the occasion.
