Uttarakhand police sensitive towards women safety- DGP

The Uttarakhand police is sensitive towards women safety. There have been various changes made in the laws related to women’s safety after the Nirbhaya incident and some new laws have also been enacted. Considerable changes have been made in the IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act, said the State’s director general of police Ashok Kumar. He was speaking after inaugurating a day-long workshop for women police officers from the rank of sub inspector to deputy superintendent who investigate various crimes against women. The women officers who attended the workshop included a total of 116 sub inspectors, two inspectors and seven deputy superintendents.

Kumar said that the workshop had been organised so that the investigators receive full and correct information about the relevant legal provisions.

He said that the latest standard operating procedure (SOP) prepared by the Bureau of Police Research and Development regarding the relevant laws and investigation of crimes against women should reach all the investigators who should follow these. The task of the police is to help the victim, ensure justice to the victim and work according to the law, he added.

Women Empower and Child Development department state project officer Vimla Makhloga spoke on gender sensitization and victim rehabilitation; additional director, Legal, Hari Vinod Joshi spoke on latest amendments in IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act, joint director, Legal,  GC Pancholi spoke about duties of the investigator and police station in-charge and witness protection.

The speakers in the workshop laid stress on sensitive behaviour towards the victims, the provision for the victim of rape and under POCSO Act lodging FIR in any district or state, going to the victim instead of calling her to the police station for recording her statement and getting her medical examination done within 24 hours among other aspects.
