U’khand cabinet minister Yaspal Arya, MLA son join Congress

Says it is like a homecoming for him.

In major political development which would have a bearing on the upcoming assembly elections in Uttarakhand, the senior cabinet minister Yashpal Arya joined Congress party along with his MLA son Sanjeev Arya on Monday. Arya has also tendered his resignation from the state cabinet. The father son duo has also decided to resign from the membership of the state assembly.

Arya who is a six time MLA joined the Congress party in a programme held in New Delhi on  Monday in presence of central leaders and former Chief Minister Harish Rawat, PCC president Ganesh Godiyal and Leader of opposition in assembly Pritam Singh. It is notable that Arya had left Congress and joined BJP just ahead of the assembly elections of 2017. Arya’s homecoming to Congress is being considered as a shot in arm for the party ahead of the crucial assembly election.

In a swift political development Yashpal Arya and his son Sanjeev Ayra reached the headquarters of All India Congress Committee (AICC) in New Delhi on Monday morning. At AICC headquarters, Yaspal Arya and his son were welcomed into Congress party by general secretary (organisation) of AICC K C Venugopal, spokesperson of Congress party Randeep Singh Surjewala and other Congress leaders. 

Congress leader Venugopal said that Arya’s joining is ‘happiest moments’ for the Congress party. Yashpal Arya is a MLA from Bajpur assembly constituency while his son Sanjeev Arya represents Nainital assembly constituency.

Speaking on the occasion, Arya said that the day is very important for him because he is coming back to his home. He said that he is joining the Congress party due to the efforts made by Rahul Gandhi. Expressing satisfaction Arya further added that he has worked for 40 years in the Congress party and the Congress party has always given him a big responsibility. Arya said that he would work dedicatedly for the Congress party and claimed that he has no ambition left now. Arya later met the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. 

Arya’s personal interest came to fore- CM Dhami

 Commenting on the development, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that in the BJP the interest of the nation is kept in the first place, the party comes in second position and the personal interests are in the last position. The CM quipped that he believes that Arya has kept his personal interest above everything else. Arya held Transport, social welfare, minorities’ welfare and excise departments in the Dhami cabinet.
