The Dehradun chief medical officer Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma inaugurated the Gubara Clinic, a specialised facility for Type-1 diabetes, in the Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital on Friday.  Sharma highlighted the increasing prevalence of Type-1 diabetes over time, noting that it is a growing concern. Considering this, the clinic was inaugurated during the celebrations of the State’s 25 foundation day. The Gubara Clinic aims to offer specialised services beginning Friday, including free testing for Type-1 diabetes, particularly for children. Sharma said that A new clinic will soon open at the Vikasnagar sub-district hospital and the Raipur Community Health Centre (CHC). Currently, a list of affected children in the district has been compiled. A campaign will be launched through the Community Health Officer (CHO) and the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) to identify other children in need, ensuring that no child is deprived of these services. Currently, 124 children suffering from Type-1 diabetes are receiving support in the Dehradun district, he said.

He further informed that a senior pediatrician from the district hospital will provide treatment to children in this clinic. A voluntary organisation has partnered with the clinic to offer technical support, he said.

Regarding Type-1 diabetes, Sharma informed that this condition is not associated with obesity or lifestyle factors but is genetically caused by a deficiency in insulin. Individuals with Type-1 diabetes may experience constant hunger, weight loss and increased thirst, among other symptoms. Timely diagnosis is crucial in managing this condition. Therefore, individuals or parents who notice these symptoms should contact their healthcare providers immediately.

The hospital’s principal medical superintendent Dr Manu Jain said that this clinic primarily caters to children aged upto 17 years. This initiative will help many individuals manage their Type- 1 diabetes, as specialised doctors will be available to assist patients on Friday, he said.
