Two dead, 13 sustain injuries in accident

Two people died and 13 sustained injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a 100 metre deep gorge in the Betalghat block of the Nainital district late on Sunday. The accident occurred on the Ratighat- Betalghat motor road when all passengers were returning home from a local fair in the Betalghat area, the officials said. They informed that the police rushed to the spot and rescued the passengers from the gorge with the help of locals. The injured people were taken to Betalghat Community Health Centre. The doctors declared a 14-year-old girl as brought dead and a man, Ummed Singh (65) from Naini Chak village died during the treatment.  The officials informed that five people sustained injuries and six were in extremely critical condition. They were taken to Sushila Tiwari Hospital in Haldwani using private vehicles after the doctors referred them to a higher centre. All injured are under treatment, as per the officials. They informed that according to the locals, the vehicle overturned and fell into the gorge. Many people claimed that the accident allegedly occurred due to the overloading of passengers in the vehicle and the damaged route.  Responding to these claims, the officials said that the police are investigating the matter and will question the injured people too after their health gets stable. The post-mortem of both deceased was done on Monday. Further action will be taken accordingly, the officials added.
