Tree saves student who jumped down gorge to die

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

A 21-year-old college student attempted suicide by jumping into a 600-metre-deep gorge at the ‘suicide point’ in Bidholi area of Premnagar in Dehradun on Tuesday night. However, instead of falling straight to the bottom, he got trapped among the branches of a tree, which prevented a fatal impact.

The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that Premnagar police received information about the suicide attempt through the student’s friends after which, a team was quickly dispatched to the site. Given the dangerous terrain, dense forest, rain and darkness, the rescue operation proved challenging. He said that using mobile tracking technology, the police pinpointed the student’s approximate location in the gorge. However, when the police spotted him stuck on the tree, they immediately sought assistance from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

In a high-risk rescue mission, the joint team carefully navigated the difficult terrain and managed to bring the student to safety. He was then rushed to the hospital for medical evaluation, as per Singh. The student is an Uttar Pradesh resident who studies in a private college in Dehradun. He is a third year student in Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and reportedly attempted suicide over low attendance and exam backlogs.
