Transport department cracks down on illegal bike rentals in Dehradun

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Transport department in Dehradun has warned operators against running bike and scooter rentals without proper permits. The department also conducted inspections over the weekend near the railway station, targeting several rental outlets operating without authorisation. The enforcement action was carried out under the supervision of regional transport officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun division Anita Chamola, with task force teams shutting down multiple establishments on the spot. The RTO informed that teams inspected outlets including First Gear Bike Rental, Gokul Bike Rent, Dream Ride Bike Rental, Bike Rental Club and On Time Bike Rental. They found several violations, including operating vehicles without permits, using private vehicles for commercial purposes, running outlets at locations different from those listed on their licenses, failing to maintain daily rental records and not providing required facilities such as parking, reception and toilets. Teams also noted the absence of displayed licenses and complaint registers, as per Chamola. She informed that the department filed cases under sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, including using unregistered vehicles, operating without permits, violating insurance requirements and failing to follow general directives. She said that many owners and local traders protested the enforcement action, staged a sit-in and argued with the teams but authorities continued their operations. Chamola instructed all rental operators to run their businesses only at authorised locations with valid permits. She emphasised that strict action will continue against unauthorised rental operations to ensure public safety and compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act.
