Three arrested in death of SC man

Three men were arrested in a case which resulted in the death of a scheduled caste man Jitendra Das who was allegedly beaten by the upper caste men purportedly for dining with them during a marriage party in Shrikot in Tehri district. The incident which happened on the night of April 26 left Jitendra Das severely injured, though the police state that post-mortem report has not clearly revealed the exact cause of death. Doctors have advised to preserve his viscera before conducting the last rites. The family of the deceased performed the last rites of Jitendra Das with the help of villagers on Monday at Nainbagh.

Director General (DG) Law and Order, Ashok Kumar said, “Three accused have been arrested on Monday. Earlier the case was registered under the IPC sections 147, 504, 506 and SC-ST Act, now IPC section 302 (murder) has been added.”

Circle Officer (CO) Narendra Nagar, Uttam Singh who is also the investigating officer in this case informed the media on Monday, “Three accused Soban Singh, Gajendra Singh and Hukam Singh have been arrested.”

It is pertinent to mention here that that the sister of deceased Jitendra Das on April 29 filed a complaint in Kempty Police Station against seven accused Soban Singh, Gajendra Singh, Hukam Singh, Kushal, Gabbar, Gambhir and Harbir Singh.

According to the complainant, on the night of April 26, Jitendra Das was beaten brutally by these seven accused upper caste men for dining with them. Next morning he was found unconscious by his family members and was taken to Nainbagh community health centre. He was referred from there to Mahant Indresh Hospital in Dehradun on the same day where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning. However, the post-mortem report was not able to clarify the exact cause of his death.

It is also worth mentioning that Tehri Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Yogendra Singh visited the village of deceased Jitendra Das after his last rites.
