The police on Tuesday arrested two men on charges of robbing Rs 1.5 lakh from a finance employee at gunpoint under Haridwar’s SIIDCUL area on February 15. The accused identified as Shivkumar and Ghulam Sabir also opened fire at the police when they went to arrest them. Shivkumar has claimed that he robbed the victim to get money for the treatment of his pregnant wife, the Haridwar superintendent of police (City) Swatantra Kumar Singh said. He informed that the police also recovered Rs 50,000 cash, a pistol, live cartridges and two mobile phones among other things from the accused.

According to Shivkumar, he needed money for the treatment of his pregnant wife and he expressed his concern to his friends. They allegedly told him about a man Rahul Kumar who collects installments for his company from the people of the Hazara Grant village of Bahadrabad block on the 15th day of every month. Both accused along with their third accomplice, who is still at large, robbed the victim at gunpoint and threw his bike keys far to ensure he could not chase them.

The SP said that the police team was able to identify and locate both accused after analysing footage from several CCTV cameras. When the police approached them to nab them, they opened fire at the team but were eventually caught by the police. Kumar said that besides the relevant section for robbery, the police have also registered a case against both accused under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code for carrying out a deadly attack on the police team. The police are searching for the third accomplice who will be apprehended soon, he added.
