The NITI Aayog has declared Haridwar the best aspirational district, entitling it to an additional allocation of Rs three crore. In a letter to the State’s chief secretary and Haridwar district magistrate, NITI Aayog Aspirational Districts Programme director Rakesh Ranjan informed that the district had secured first rank in the basic infrastructure theme.

Haridwar district magistrate Vinay Shankar Pandey said that Haridwar district had been allocated to Union Commerce and Industries minister Piyush Goyal who has been actively pursuing efforts to take Haridwar to this position. Stating that the health sector is one parameter where the district lags among aspirational districts, Pandey said that efforts will be made to improve the Haridwar district hospital and sub district hospitals in Roorkee.

Ranjan’s letter also stated that the districts must create a plan of action in accordance with the requirements of the aspirational districts scheme and work with the State and Central officers in-charge before sending it to NITI Aayog for final approval by the empowered committee of secretaries established for the programme.
