Tilak is a mark typically worn on the forehead by Hindus as it is considered very auspicious. It is a protective mark as well as a sign that shows religious affiliation. The tilak is of great spiritual importance to Hindus.
Scriptures state that the middle finger should be used to apply the tilak as this finger is associated with the heart and the vibrations flowing through it are carried to the heart. The tilak is applied on the forehead on the point of immense power as it has the body’s most important chakra- the Ajna chakra. The space between the eyebrows is associated with intuition and spirituality. It is a junction where highest number of neurons meet and therefore it is one of the most important and sensitive zones. In Ayurveda, the basic principle behind the treatment called Shirodhara (the constant dripping of warm oil on forehead) is to take out excess heat and relax the system. Likewise, the application of tilak results in almost the same benefits.
The tilak varies in shape and size, material and color, meaning and significance. Sandalwood tilak is a yellow coloured tilak made using sandalwood paste and is usually applied in a U-shape. It has a soothing and cooling effect on the forehead. It is very beneficial in curing headaches and migraine problem.
Kumkum or vermillion tilak is a turmeric powder which is turned red and it is worn in a round shape during prayers or on everyday basis. It reduces stress and fatigue. This red coloured tilak symbolises courage, power, enthusiasm and success.
Bhasma or Vibhuti tilak is made from ashes and is collected from burnt wood, cowdung cake or incense sticks. It protects body from sudden and radical changes. It brings glory, destroys evil and protects from ill- health. It is also said to have medicinal values as it absorbs excess moisture and prevents one from cold and headaches.
Turmeric or haldi tilak promotes good health, regulates body aura and eliminates the negative energies. Astrologically, turmeric is related to the benefic and auspicious planet Jupiter and it attracts its natural characteristics and brings wisdom.
Applying the unbroken raw rice on tilak also has a strong underlying significance. The main reason of putting rice on tilak and throwing them behind is that rice is considered to be one of the signs of purity. It gives positive thoughts and energy and throws away the negativity behind us.
