The Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) department is planning to implement a scheme to benefit single women across the State. The director of WECD Prashant Arya informed that the department is making plans to implement the scheme to support single women across the State. The department will soon release the guidelines for the said scheme to the public. The scheme will specifically focus on providing benefits to women who are divorced or widows. The main objective of the scheme is to prioritise self-employment opportunities for these women who have limited means of earning a livelihood. The scheme is expected to be implemented in the State in the near future, he added.

Commenting about the Status of Nanda Gaura Yojana, Arya indicated that earlier, the eligibility criteria for the scheme were limited to girls who had passed class XII. However, the guidelines for the scheme have since been revised and now only girls who have been admitted to college for higher education are eligible. To register for the scheme, girls are required to present their admit cards or identity cards of the college. Further, starting from last year, the registration for the scheme has been conducted online for the convenience of the beneficiaries, he added.

“In the year 2022-23, approximately 35,000 girls registered for the scheme. Unfortunately, due to unavoidable circumstances, their payments were not processed. However, the payments for the year 2022-23 will now be made in 2024. In 2024, an estimated 30,000 girls have registered and they will receive their payments through digital transfer in February. Under the said scheme girls receive Rs 51,000 which will benefit them in pursuing higher studies,” said Arya.
