People favour separate market for street vendors to prevent congestion

Many people in Dehradun have expressed the need for a separate market for street vendors to alleviate traffic congestion in the city. The district administration, police and Regional Transport Office are undertaking an anti-encroachment drive in various parts of the provisional State capital to prevent traffic congestion caused by such encroachments.

Dwelling on the issue, the president of the Doon Valley Mahanagar Udyog Vyapar Mandal (DVMUVM) Pankaj Masson appreciated the efforts made by the authorities as it indirectly benefit the sales of shopkeepers. Earlier, street vendors would set up stalls outside shops, which negatively impacted the sales of the shops in the market as customers would opt for the cheaper prices offered by street vendors. However, the anti-encroachment drive by the authorities has changed this situation, which should be a permanent arrangement. To ensure a permanent solution, the State government should establish a separate market for street vendors, he added.

“In an effort to control traffic congestion in the market, the authorities have initiated a commendable drive. As a result of this initiative, visiting the market and going shopping has become much easier without any hindrances caused by traffic. Additionally, street vendors offer products at affordable prices, which is advantageous for those who cannot afford items at higher rates. In light of this, the government should take measures to establish a new market specifically for street vendors,” said local resident Uma Paul.

Another local resident Indu Verma said that while it is true that street vendors in the market contribute to traffic congestion and hinder the general public’s shopping experience, she believes that a separate market space should be allocated to local vendors rather than individuals from other cities, in order to address the issue of traffic congestion effectively.
