Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) has recently inaugurated the State’s first co-treatment plant for septage treatment in the Kargi Chowk area of Dehradun. Informing about this, the UJS secretary (Appraisal) Maneesh Semwal said that earlier, there was no co-treatment plant in the State capable of processing the stagnant waste from residential septic tanks. To address this, the UJS has taken the initiative to establish this co-treatment plant for effective septage management.

The co-treatment plant with a 260 kilolitres capacity has started functioning in the Kargi Chowk area of the city. This facility is designed to assist in managing the septage produced by numerous households in the region that do not have access to the sewer system. He said that earliery, de-sludging vehicles were frequently required to empty tanks and transport the waste to this site or other locations. With the start of this co-treatment plant, it will now be feasible to treat the septic waste generated by local homes.

This new facility is expected to enhance public health and reduce environmental damage. The Central government has allocated about Rs 70 lakh under the Swachh Bharat Mission to support this initiative. As a result, the plant was constructed within a period of six months and has not started functioning, he said.

Every day, this plant can empty 40 to 50 tankers of desludging vehicles. During the inauguration of the plant, the UJS chief general manager Neelima Garg, general manager DK Singh and other officials were also present.

It is pertinent to mention that the UJS has also geared up to ensure smooth water supply during the monsoon season. Earlier, the UJS secretary (Administration) Satendra Kumar Gupta informed that they have made the necessary arrangements to ensure prompt repairs if any water supply systems are compromised due to heavy rainfall. They procured essential supplies, including pipes, fittings and other materials needed for repairs, during April and May, he added.
