SRHU receives patent on a microbial culture apparatus

The officer bearers of the Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) claimed on Tuesday that the patent department, Government of India, has granted patent to an apparatus meant for spreading microbial culture on a petri dish developed by the university.  They further said that the procedure has utility in evenly spreading the microbial culture on a soft microbiological growth medium in a petri dish without damaging the agar surface.

They added that while traditionally, skilled laboratory technicians, using a hand tool known as a spreader made up of glass, plastic, metal or any inert material, perform the isolation of bacteria manually, this new hand-tool or spreader includes a terminal loop to make multiple streaks. As per their claim, the manual method involves a number of drawbacks and the present invention, while overcoming the drawbacks, will help in putting to use a more efficacious method of homogenously spreading the microbial cultures on a petri dish.

Speaking on the development, SRHU chancellor Vijay Dhasmana said that the university nurtures creative thinking to discover new vistas of inventions in the quest of knowledge. “The recent patent awarded to us is a utility patent based on a novel microbiology method to isolate a single microorganism,” he added.
