The Uttarakhand assembly speaker Prem Chand Agarwal inaugurated a series of murals painted on the boundary wall of the assembly building on Monday. He added that it is the responsibility of every Uttarakhandi to preserve its rich culture.
The speaker said that Nanda Raj Jat Yatra is the longest Yatra of Asia and showcases the rich cultural history of Garhwal and Kumaon regions. He said that the folk songs, instruments, folk dance, paintings and sculptures provide a unique identity to Uttarakhand. Agarwal said that our assembly should look like the assembly of Uttarakhand and he always strives for fulfilling this motive. He expressed confidence that the murals would become a centre of attraction for the tourists and would introduce the younger generation with the rich cultural history of the state. The speaker also declared a place near the murals as a selfie spot.
On the insistence of the speaker ten murals have been painted on the boundary wall of the assembly. These murals showcase different stages of the 280 km long Yatra. Held every 12 years, the Nanda Raj Jat Yatra is completed in 20 days. It is believed that Nanda ( Goddess Parvati) is sent to the house of her husband after every 12 years. Dev Dolis ( Idols) from different parts of Garhwal and Kumaon keep on merging in the Yatra as it continues in the highlands of Himalayas.
