PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

As per the figures provided by the police, snatching incidents are surging in Dehradun. Police report revealed that the number of snatching incidents has gone up compared to the previous year.  While in 2024, a total of 35 snatching cases were registered in the district, the number increased to 48 cases in 2025.  The spike in street crimes is a matter of worry for the police, the officers said, adding that most of these crimes have been solved.

According to the data presented at the crime review meeting held in Dehradun, about 96 per cent of snatching cases were satisfactorily solved by the police. These cases included mobile snatching and purse snatching reported from across the city.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dehradun, Ajai Singh said that strong action has been taken against street crimes. “Police have controlled snatching cases effectively. In nearly all cases, the accused were arrested and stolen items were recovered,” he said and added that the police teams are keeping hawk- eye vigilance to prevent such crimes and ensure public safety.

This correspondent talked to a diverse group of people from different backgrounds and they all sounded concerned over the spike in street crimes.  A student, Rahul Kumar said that they were worried with the increasing snatching cases in the streets of the city. “But it is good to hear that police are arresting the criminals,” he said.

A youth, Ravi said that it is no longer safe to talk on the phone while walking or sitting in a rickshaw. “This is a worrisome trend and unless police come down heavily on these street crimes Dehradun will cease to be a safe city in time to come,” he said.  A businessman from Doon, Anil Verma said that police action is improving but more needs to be done. “Capturing them only is not a solution. They should be punished appropriately so that fear of the law is struck into them,” he added.
