SIT starts probe in Kashipur farmer suicide case

The high-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the suicide case of Kashipur farmer Sukhwant Singh, has initiated its investigation. The team visited the ITI police station in Udham Singh Nagar on Friday. Notably, Singh shot himself in a hotel room in the Kathgodam area of Haldwani on January 10, after posting a video on social media accusing some police officers and some property dealers of being responsible for his death. The SIT, led by inspector general of police STF Nilesh Anand Bharne, was constituted on the orders of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to investigate the matter.
According to the police, the investigation has been initiated and the SIT is currently examining the case diary and other records. The SIT is also reviewing the deceased’s post-mortem report, mobile phone and other documentary evidence from the Kathgodam police station related to the case. The mobile phone and the firearm used in the incident are being sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination.
In addition to this, the SIT’s technical team has started a detailed review of the email sent by the deceased, in which he made allegations against various local residents and police officers.
Further, aside from the magisterial inquiry led by the commissioner of the Kumaon Division, all investigative proceedings regarding the allegations in this case will be conducted by the SIT, chaired by the IG- STF. Commenting on this, director general of police, Deepam Seth stated that the SIT is conducting an impartial, transparent and thorough investigation of all facts and evidence related to the case.
