Sheetal Raj climbs Europe’s highest peak

Sheetal Raj, a resident of Salmora village in Pithoragarh district recently unfurled the Indian flag on Mount Elbrus along with her three team members. The nation’s Independence Day was also celebrated with this feat of climbing the highest peak of Europe.

Raj first experienced mountaineering as an NCC cadet. She started mountaineering training at the age of 16 in 2013. Later she did an advanced course in mountaineering in 2015 from the Himalayan Institute of Mountaineering in Darjeeling. She has also climbed Mount Everest and the world’s third highest peak Kanchenjunga.

Raj had practiced intensively in the Panchachuli mountain ranges of Pithoragarh apart from practicing mountaineering in Ladakh. She considers Chandraprabha Aitwal and LRS Dharmshaktu as her inspiration.
