To check the menace of stray cattle the Uttarakhand government is mulling over a plan to bring a stringent law. The law will have a provision of punishing the cattle owners who tend to abandon their old and non productive cattle. The animal husbandry minister Saurabh Bahuguna informed the house during the ongoing budget session of assembly that the department had recently conducted a survey according to which there are 27,000 stray bovine species in the State. In response to the issue of stray cattle raised by Congress MLAs Gopal Singh Rana and Harish Dhami, the minister said that the State government has increased the grant given to the Gau Sadans to Rs 80 per animal per day. The government is also planning to set up 70 new Gau Sadans in different parts of the State. The minister said that though the government is doing its best to provide shelter to abandoned cattle, the cattle owners need to be educated that they should not leave their non productive cattle on the roads.
