Fund to be used to build 100 percent sewer network in Rishikesh, Haridwar

To develop 100 percent sewer line network in important pilgrimage towns-Rishikesh and Haridwar- along the Ganga river in Uttarakhand, the State Government, through the Union Government, signed a loan agreement worth 150 million Euros (about Rs 1,200 crore) with the German Development Bank (KfW) on Thursday. As per the agreement, the total cost of the project amounting to about Rs 1,200 crore will include about Rs 960 crore loan component while the remaining sum of about Rs 240 crore will be borne by the state government as state counterpart funding. Of the loan component, 90 percent will be repaid by the Union Government while 10 percent will be repaid by the state government. Under this six-year programme, 181.50-kilometer sewer network will be laid in Haridwar city and nearby areas while 14 sewage pumping stations will be built. Similarly, 180-kilometer long sewer network will be laid in Rishikesh city and nearby areas while two sewage pumping stations and a two MLD capacity sewage treatment plant will be established. It is pertinent to note here that with various works already underway in Haridwar and Rishikesh under the Namami Gange programme, completion of works under the loan agreement will make it possible to fully prevent raw sewage and contaminated water from entering the Ganga river in Rishikesh and Haridwar. After completion of the works, the Government of India would provide funds under Namami Gange to maintain these for the next 15 years. The State’s Potable Water minister Prakash Pant said on the telephone from Delhi that the loan agreement was a major achievement for the state.
