Heavy rains cause damage in Chamoli & Rudraprayag

Heavy rains caused considerable damage in the Ghat area of Chamoli district and in parts of Rudraprayag district on Tuesday evening. Though there was no information of loss of human life till the time of this report being filed, the heavy rains resulted in debris reaching the market area and homes in Chamoli while in Rudraprayag it caused considerable damage to crops apart from causing debris to block roads.  The Chamoli police also raised an alert in the late evening about water level in the Alaknanda river rising, asking people residing in riverside areas to stay alert.

On receiving information about the heavy rain in Chamoli district, chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat talked to the Chamoli district magistrate on the phone and directed that relief be provided immediately to the affected people. He directed that proper treatment should be provided to those injured and accommodation along with food should be provided to those rendered homeless. Assessing the loss caused to people, compensation should be provided to the affected people without delay, he directed. According to local sources, heavy rain was experienced at three spots on the Binsar mountain above the Ghat bazaar resulted in debris reaching the market area. Apart from the market area, a number of homes are also reported to have been buried in debris. The police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and district administration officials were reported to have reached the affected areas.

Meanwhile, in Rudraprayag district heavy rain was reported near Bainoli on the Tilwada-Mayali motor road on Tuesday evening. The heavy rain resulted in debris landing on the road, standing crops being damaged and some roadside eateries also being damaged. The Tilwada-Mayali motor road was blocked by the debris. There were no reports of human casualties though the heavy rain caused considerable panic in the area which is being monitored by the district administration. This is the second consecutive day when heavy rains caused damage in the district. Similar conditions were experienced in Narkota and Khankra areas of Rudraprayag on Monday.
