The Regional Transport Office (RTO) organised a road safety and environmental awareness programme, including a rally, at Doon Library and Research Centre (DLRC) on Wednesday as part of the National Road Safety Month–2026. During the programme, it was informed that 131 cities across the country have been declared Non-Attainment Cities based on their air quality. This includes Dehradun, Rishikesh and Kashipur in Uttarakhand. Under the National Clean Air Programme, an action plan has been in place since 2019, aiming to reduce air pollution by 40 per cent by the year 2026. Experts pointed out that poor vehicle maintenance not only heightens air pollution but also leads to an increase in road accidents. They emphasised that regular inspections and proper maintenance can significantly reduce pollution.

Speaking during the programme, deputy transport commissioner Sunil Sharma said, “Pollution control is a social responsibility.” He added, “Air pollution affects children the most. Reducing it is not just a departmental duty but a responsibility of every citizen.”

Further, as a chief guest municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said, “Just as we keep our homes clean, it is equally our collective responsibility to keep our roads safe and clean. Aware citizens lay the foundation for safe roads and a healthy environment.”

Regional transport officer, Dehradun  Anita Chamola,  stated, “Our target is a 50 per cent reduction in road accidents.”

Officials informed approximately 250 participants, including vehicle dealers, transport unions, drivers and institutions, took part in the awareness rally.
