Road construction works during monsoon sparks concern

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun
Residents have expressed their concerns regarding the ongoing road construction in Dehradun, which has become a significant issue, particularly during the monsoon season. Notably, the recent construction work primarily carried out by Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) and others has raised various issues among the public. They reported that roadwork occurs after every two to three months, leading to numerous problems, including accidents and damage to vehicles. Residents believe that the work should be completed all at once rather than repeatedly and they urge the authorities to refrain from conducting such work during the monsoon season, as it exacerbates existing difficulties and poses greater risks.
Vikas Jagori expressed that construction activities in various parts of the city have created challenges for both residents and commuters who regularly use these routes. He said that the situation worsens during the monsoon season when the construction materials become wet, increasing the risk of vehicle slips and other accidents. He pointed out that in the city, roadwork by UPCL, Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan and others occurs every two to three months rather than being completed all at once. He urged the authorities to devise a more effective plan for these projects to minimise disruptions, particularly during the rainy season.
Kiran Tiwari also raised concerns and shared her experiences regarding the issues created by ongoing construction work, which has made driving on the roads challenging. The construction activities have resulted in traffic congestion and she has found it difficult to maintain balance while driving. Tiwari said that such projects in the city seem never-ending and occur continuously. She suggested that authorities should implement effective planning to complete the work promptly rather than allowing it to drag on indefinitely, especially before the onset of the monsoon season, as during this period it leads to serious risks and complications.
Additionally, senior citizen Jagmohan expressed similar concerns and questioned when the construction would be fully completed. He pointed out that every year, various departments initiate road construction projects, often leaving holes that contribute to accidents, traffic issues and health problems such as allergies. Elderly individuals like him feel particularly affected by these ongoing disruptions. Proper planning for such work, which includes periods and other factors, plays a vital role.
