Return of rebels provides boost to Congress in Nainital

The Congress party appears to have received a shot in the arm after two rebels of the party and more than 1,000 persons from various parties were inducted into the Congress. The rebels and a large number of people jointed the Congress at a programme attended here on the weekend  by the party State-in charge Anugrah Narayan Singh, co in-charge Rajesh Dharmani and the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Pritam Singh in Haldwani. One of those who had earlier rebelled, Mahesh Sharma had twice contested the Assembly poll against the Congress national secretary Prakash Joshi from Kaladhungi constituency. In the political circles, it is being surmised that he has been assured the mayoral ticket for Haldwani. The party has been observing his hold in the Kaladhungi and Haldwani areas for some years now. Considering this, his return to the party is being seen as a result of the party’s efforts to consolidate its position with the support of field workers in time for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Further, this is also expected to strengthen the party’s position in the next assembly election and make the contest tougher for the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. The second rebel, Harendra Bora had contested the Vidhan Sabha elections in 2017 from the Lalkuan assembly constituency as an independent candidate. His return to the party is likely to strengthen the position of the Congress in this Vidhan Sabha constituency. Bora is considered to be quite popular especially among the youth from Gaulapar to Bindukhatta area. When Harish Chandra Durgapal had been denied a party ticket at the last moment and had then decided to contest as an independent from Lalkuan assembly constituency in 2012, the sympathy of the public with Durgapal prevented Bora from achieving much in that election. In the 2017 Vidhan Sabha elections, Bora was not given a ticket to contest the polls by the Congress. He fought as an independent candidate. However, both he and Durgapal were swept away in the Modi wave and lost to the BJP candiate Navin Dumka. The PCC president Pritam Singh said that both Sharma and Bora were inducted back into the Congress with the approval of all the regional party leaders. With the return of these two leaders, the Congress has become stronger and will consolidate its support in this region to rout the BJP in the next elections, opined Singh. Leader of opposition in the Vidhan Sabha and Haldwani MLA Indira Hridayesh opined that with the return of these two dedicated leaders in the party, the position of the Congress will become stronger in the Nainital district. Bora himself said that his focus will be efforts to strengthen the Congress party. A public movement will be started under senior party leader Harish Chandra Durgapal in support of the demands for granting ownership rights to residents in Lalkuan and according revenue village status to Bindukhatta, he added. Meanwhile, Sharma said that his return to the party will strengthen the trust factor. The party workers will unite and make necessary efforts to boost the position of the party in the region, he added. read more posts… Monday, 24 September 2018 | PNS | Haldwani–
